Pick and Choose

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father

except through Me” (John 14:6 NKJV).

If you are a mother, you’ll agree with the motto “pick and choose your battles.” In the home, parents must decide which moral beliefs and behaviors require immediate intervention, and which matters can be left to address another day. In the world, Christians must decide which points of doctrine are necessary and foundational when sharing Christ with the world, and which matters are better left to address when discipling new believers. When sharing Christ, you may be approached with many different “religious” questions from lost people. How do I know if God is hearing my prayers? What if I don’t want to go to church all the time? Does God care about what beverage I have with my meal? Trying to answer every question can be exhausting, and not every doctrinal question must be settled before a person can place her faith in Jesus Christ as Savior. But how will you respond to someone who is unsure that Christianity is the only true “religion”? What would you say to someone who asks, “Does it matter to Jesus whether we believe that He is the only way to heaven?”

In John 14:6, Jesus responded to Thomas’s question about the way to enter heaven. He made a plainspoken claim to be the only way to have a right relationship with God the Father. Each individual must decide if he or she believes Jesus, or if they are willing to say that Jesus is only “a” way, not “the” way.

Many of His fellow Jews in Jesus’s day were skeptical of Jesus’s claims. He told them, “I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins” (John 8:23–24 NKJV). Because Jesus didn’t backpedal from the truth to gain more followers, we can have full confidence that we can reach the world for Christ without having to bow to popular opinion, but by standing on every word of the Way, the Truth, and the Life—Jesus.

Father, my full faith is in Jesus my Savior. Help me stand firm in my belief that

Jesus is the only way to salvation. Teach me to express this truth in love. Amen.
